C1 Advanced

Effective and flexible. At C1 you use English fluently for social, academic and professional life, catch implicit meaning and express nuance almost without hesitation.

Overview

What C1 Advanced means

C1 is the first "proficient user" level. You can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise implicit meaning. You express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching, and use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.

Lessons at this level are discussion- and project-led: seminars, case studies, structured debate and stylistic writing. The focus is subtlety — collocation, tone, cohesion and rhetorical effect — supported by detailed weekly feedback on style as much as accuracy.

FAQ

Good to know

What can I do at C1 that I could not at B2?
At C1 you use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes, grasp implicit meaning, and express yourself fluently almost without searching for words. It is a noticeable step up in nuance and control.
How long does C1 take to complete?
C1 usually takes longer than the earlier levels — often 14–16 weeks or more — because progress at this stage is about refining subtlety, style and precision rather than adding basics.
Is C1 accepted for university and top exams?
Yes. C1 maps to roughly an IELTS 7–8 and is accepted by most universities and demanding employers. Our exam-prep teachers tailor practice to your target.
